The ACC Has a Long Ways to Go

By Scott Burks
The Atlantic Coast Conference (the conference
of my youth) may be the best college basketball conference in the NCAAs,
they are not on par with other conferences when it comes to college
football.
In fact, it's not even close to the best in
the land: the Southeastern Conference. That was proven last Saturday
when the two teams the will play in the ACC championship game next Saturday,
#10 Georgia Tech and Clemson, lost to teams from the SEC that considered
also-rans in their conference (Georgia and South Carolina, respectively).
Let's first analyze the Georgia-Georgia Tech
game. The Bulldogs took it to the Yellow Jackets the majority of the
game before a late Tech rally. That was a stark contrast to what
happened last year in Athens when Tech literally ran all over the Bulldogs.
Tech was supposed to do the same AND THEN SOME last Saturday in Atlanta --
especially against a Georgia team that until that point had won SIX games
(compared to Tech's 10 games). The Bulldogs instead were the team that
punched first and often against the Yellow Jackets.
Now here's the Clemson-South Carolina game.
That game was absolutely pathetic. The Tigers got their asses kicked,
plain and simple. The Gamecocks took it to Clemson from the coin flip
and never looked back. And I do not care that the game was played in
Columbia. The Tigers were the better team heading into the game and
they should have done a better job against their arch-rival.
The good news is that the conference should
improve next season, given Miami's resurgence and both Techs (Georgia and
Virginia) taking big steps from last season. The ACC needs to get more
out of improving teams such as UNC, Clemson, and Boston College.
One more thing: STOP PLAYING THE CONFERENCE
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IN FLORIDA! The ACC is based in North Carolina, so
play the game in Charlotte. Hell, the Carolina Panthers aren't
deserving, so why the hell not?
