Why Are the Phillies Making this Move for Halladay?

By Scott Burks
This is the ultimate lateral move.
The Philadelphia
Phillies are close to acquiring stud pitcher Roy Halladay from the Toronto
Blue Jays in a three team deal with the Seattle Mariners. The problem
is that the Phillies will have to give up another stud pitcher in Cliff Lee
to make that happen.
So let me get
this straight. A team is about to trade away a proven stud for another
stud. Why? That's like trading in
Beyonce
for Rihanna, or for
you old-schoolers Halle
Berry for
Salli Richardson. What's the point?
Why not keep Lee,
let him pitch his way to another good season in Philly and go for Halladay
FOLLOWING next season (or even next season at the trade deadline)?
Last I checked, Halladay has a "No Trade" clause where he can use to go to a
contender. And Philly is, after all, a contender.
I'll tell you
what, the Mariners have to be happy as hell to land Lee. That would
give them the pitching ace they've been missing since Randy Johnson way back
in the day. And that should be enough for them to contend with the LA
Angels, who just lost pitcher John Lackey to the Boston Red Sox
And who knows
what the Blue Jays are doing? They actually have fielded talented
teams for the last few years. It's also not their fault that they are
in the same division as my New York Yankees, the damn Red Sox, and the Tampa
Bay Rays. The Blue Jays fans deserve a lot better than this.
