Things Will not Be the Same without Meyer

By Scott Burks
File this in the
"Didn't See that -ish Coming" category.
Florida Gators
coach Urban Meyer will be coaching his last game in the Sugar Bowl against
the Cincinnati Bearcats. He cited concerns over his health as his
reason for ending his head coaching career.
Meyer will be
missed not only in the SEC, but in all of college football. He
revolutionized the spread option during his stops in Bowling Green, Utah,
and Florida. The man won two national championships in five years in
Florida, while narrowly missing out on playing for a third this season.
Unfortunately,
there will be some nay-sayers/conspiracy theorists who think that Meyer quit
because he felt he couldn't win without stud QB Tim Tebow. To call
that thought asinine would those fools too much credit.
It would have
been fascinating to see Meyer win with another QB next season. As
hard-working as Meyer reportedly is, it wouldn't take him long to keep the
wins piling up with a new QB. After all, this is the same coach who
accomplished the following before coming to Gainesville, Florida:
-
Compiled a
17-6 record in two seasons at Bowling Green
-
Won two
Mountain West Conference championships in two seasons at Utah, capped
with a 12-0 record in his last season.
Since arriving in
Gainesville in 2005, Meyer owned the University of Florida, the SEC, and
college football. I enjoyed the run while it lasted, and will miss
seeing Meyer patrol the sidelines in "the Swamp". I must say,
something tells me that this will not be the last time we will see Meyer in
college football.
Nevertheless, get
well soon, Urban Meyer. Your family and college football will be
better for it.
