The ACC is Far from the Best in Basketball

By Scott Burks
This is going to
hurt me to type this.
The Atlantic
Coast Conference, the conference of my youth, is not the best college
basketball conference in the country this season (that would be the Big
East). Hell, it's not even the second-best conference in the country
(that would be the Big Ten [11]).
Here is how bad
things are in the ACC: Duke, the "big dog" in the conference, is not
projected to make much noise in the NCAA tournament. The Blue Devils
have gotten their asses kicked by Wisconsin during the ACC-Big Ten Challenge
(which was won by the Big Ten) and Georgetown last weekend. Those two
teams are not even the top teams in their respective conferences.
Wait, there's
more! While Georgia Tech and Clemson made some noise thus far, neither
of them have bordered on great. The defending champion North Carolina
Tar Heels stink, REALLY stink. Wake Forest has been inconsistent at
best. And there's my alma mater North Carolina State. NC State
has been, well, NC State.
If I took the top
six teams in the ACC (Duke, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Wake, Florida State, and
Maryland) and pit them against the top six from the Big East, Big Ten (11),
and the SEC, those ACC teams wouldn't stand a chance.
Maybe I'll be
proven wrong in March, but I doubt it...
