NBA All-Star Weekend the Best in the Lot

By Scott Burks
The NBA kicked
off its All-Star weekend last night. As I watched the highlights of
the eighth Rookie vs. Sophomore game, I thought to myself: "this is what
other pro leagues' All-Star games should be like".
That's right, I
think the NBA All-Star weekend is light-years better than what the NFL,
Major League Baseball, and the NHL has to offer. Well, to be fair, MLB
is not too bad, but it is a distant second.
What sets the
NBA's All-Star weekend apart is its festivities. Besides the
Rookie/Sophomore game, the NBA has the 3-point Shootout, Skills Competition,
and the Slam Dunk contest (no matter how bad it is). MLB may have the
Home Run Derby, and the NHL its own Skills competition, but the NBA treats
it all like a big event that is unrivaled. Meanwhile, all the NFL has
to offer is the Pro Bowl, which is why it's the worst out of the bunch.
Sure, the fan
voting makes the NBA All-Star game a bit of a farce (Allen Iverson as a
starter?), and the players do not place a premium on defense. Then
again, it is the fan's event right? And why would we be watching ANY
All-Star game for defense? I don't mind the And-1 moves and such.
Give me that over
the Pro Bowl any day.
