Tiger Didn't Do Enough

By Scott Burks
Tiger Woods
apologize in what was the most over-hyped State of the Woods Address, ERRRR
I mean "press conference" in recent memory.
While Woods did
acknowledge his misdeeds and what-not, it still didn't mean a whole helluva
lot. The reason is simple: the "press conference" was a controlled
environment.
The 30-some odd
people in the "audience" were friends, family, and hand-picked media members
(a.k.a., "flunkies"). They were told that Woods would not be taking
ANY questions. At the end of the day, still no one knows what happened
the night Woods crashed into that fire hydrant.
Let's make one
thing clear: a press conference is NOT a press conference when no questions
are being asked. That not only makes it a farce, but it Woods' case it
made his audience members appear to be puppets. That's the reason why
I am overlooking the good (his apology, admission to infidelity, and
concessions to bad behavior on the golf course), to focus on the obvious
(his never-ending need to control EVERYTHING around him). He should
have just manned up and took some questions. That's what public
figures do when they have REAL press conferences.
The way Woods
handled his "press conference" is the reason I've long maintained that he
shouldn't have held his "press conference" in the first place. He owes
just his family an apology for his transgressions -- NO ONE ELSE.
He could have
just stuck to his statement on his website and called it a day.
Instead, given his need to control his environment and maintain his image,
he put most of us through this dog and pony show.
At least he
stayed true to himself...
