Lessons Learned in Week 17 in the NFL

By Scott Burks

The offensive line will prevent my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers from reaching the Super Bowl.  To say the Steelers had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL is the understatement of the year.  Big Ben was sacked over 40 times for the third year in a row.  The running game, once a staple of the Steelers, was inconsistent at best.  Both of those issues can be traced to the poor play of the offensive line.  It’ll be a shame that the #1 ranked defense in the league will be wasted in the playoffs.  Memo to Steelers management: the first four rounds in the 2009 draft should go something like this – offensive lineman, offensive lineman, offensive lineman, and offensive lineman.

It’s official: the 2008 Detroit Lions is the sorriest team in NFL history …and in the history of professional sports.  WHOO-HOO!!!  That’s what I screamed while witnessing the Lions achieve the “Dream Season” in losing to the Green Bay Packers to finish 0-16.  WHOO-HOO!!!  Now the talk is how the Lions rank among the worst teams in sports.  I think they are the worst in ALL of sports.  Sure you have the 1972 Philadelphia 76ers (9-72) and the New York Mets (40-162).  The difference between those two teams and the Lions – they actually WON some games.  Plus in this salary cap era in the NFL, it is much harder to suck that badly, let alone lose EVERY GAME in a season.

The Denver Broncos should have given former head coach Mike Shanahan one more season.  Shanahan is one of the better coached in the NFL.  During his 14 seasons coaching the Broncos, Shanahan had the Broncos contending for division titles for most of those years.  I mean, the man won TWO Super Bowls!  Sure he may have had John Elway for both Super Bowls, but remember that Elway didn’t win the big one in the years prior to Shanahan’s arrival.  Now Shanahan the GM did a terrible job in personnel decisions and most of his drafts (save Jay Cutler and Ryan Klady) could have been better.  For that reason, I would have given Shanahan one more season if I were team owner Pat Bowlen.  If Shanahan had another poor draft and/or questionable free agent acquisitions, then strip him of his GM duties.  Keep in mind that when the Broncos were 8-5 despite the injuries, Shanahan was praised for the coaching job his had done at that point.  It’s not like Shanahan forgot how to coach overnight.

The New York Jets did the right thing in canning Eric Mangini.  I’ve been saying for the last three seasons that Mangini was not the “Man-genius” that the media made him out to be.  His canning Monday proved that.  He was out-coached and seemed out of sorts when it came to game management.  During the loss to the Seattle Seahawks, when faced with a fourth and one in Seattle territory early in the game, Mangini chose to punt.  When faced with fourth and about three yards with more than three minutes left in the game, Mangini decided to go for it, only to come up short.  Mangini did not do a good job in managing QB Brett Favre.  One of the jobs of a head coach is making players better.  Mangini and his coaching staff made Favre look like an old 39-year-old instead of a better QB.

New England Patriots’ coach Bill Bellichick deserves, but will not get, the NFL’s Coach of the Year award.  Notice I dropped the “Bellicheat” moniker.  Bellichick coached one hell of a year after stud QB Tom Brady went down with a knee injury in Week 1.  Bellichick could have panicked after backup QB Matt Cassell had a horrible game against the Dolphins in Week 3 and signed a journeyman QB.  Instead, Bellichick stuck by Cassell, and Cassell rewarded him with an 11-5 season.  Bellichick also had the defense playing at a high level despite the injuries on that side of the ball.  For those reasons, Bellichick should be Coach of the Year.  Unfortunately, he won’t win because of the coaching job Mike Smith did in Atlanta.  That is what you call being a victim of your own success.

Your feedback is wanted!!!

your INSANE profile... soccer is not a sport!!!! Are you kidding me???? ~~~~ this from a man who ran track. What skill does it require to run from point A to point B? NASCAR is more of a sport than track and requires a lot more training
Soccer players are highly skilled and the best conditioned athletes. PLUS--- it is a lot more physical sport than people realize. There are no shoulder pads or helmets.

SOCCER IS NOT A SPORT IS BY FAR THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING TO DATE THAT I HAVE READ ON THIS WEBSITE---

PS- you know who it is ~~~~ RB

You left out one glaring issue.
The Dallas Cowboys are the worst-coached team to keep their coach. No team
under-performed like Dallas all season, and no team has as much talent (on paper).

Specific changes need to be made, but I am not holding my breath.
