Thoughts on the 2009-2010 College Bowls...

By Scott Burks
Now that the 2009-2010 bowl season has to come
to an end, here are my two cents on the bowls...
The Big Ten FINALLY showed up in the bowl
games. While the overall bowl
record wasn't stellar (4-3), the Big Ten (11)'s top teams stepped up big in
their bowl games. Penn State beating LSU 19-17. Ohio State
FINALLY coming through in a major bowl in beating Oregon 26-17. Iowa
shutting down Georgia Tech 24-14. Very impressive. Let's see if
it carries over to next season. Speaking of Georgia Tech...
The ACC, as usual, did not show up in this
bowl season. How can I
put this? The ACC stunk it up again. The conference went 3-4 in
its bowl games, which was capped by a 24-14 Iowa beating of Georgia Tech in
the Orange Bowl. That made it eight losses in the last nine BCS bowls
for the ACC. Well, at least there is basketball to look forward to.
Props to the service academies for their
beatdowns! I loved seeing the
Naval (35-13 smackdown over Missouri) and Air Force (47-20 win over Houston)
Academies administering blow-outs in their bowl games. To hear the
broadcast teams for both games rave over both Academies' strict academic and
social regimens off the field was even better.
Time for the BCS to include the Mountain
West Conference. The MWC went 4-1 in their bowl games, with the
lone loss coming in the Fiesta Bowl (Boise State over TCU). Even with
the loss, the MWC (and Boise State) sent a message to the BCS, that it is
here to stay and will not go away any time soon. The MWC could simply
point out that...
The MWC owned
the Pac-10.
Where can I start? BYU 44, Oregon State 20. Utah 37, California
27. To add more to the Pac-10 misery, the conference finished 2-5 in
bowl games. Ouch!
The SEC took
some dings, but is still the best conference in the land.
Ten bowl games, which was three more than the next highest conference.
A 6-4 record in bowl games. And, the more important thing, two BCS
bowl wins, with one of them winning the national title (Alabama). Some
may say the SEC was a bit underachieving across the board, but I still
consider it "The Beast".
