Too Little, too Late for McGwire

By Scott Burks
It's about time.
Nice to see Mark
McGwire FINALLY admitting what everyone and their mothers suspected: that he
used steroids during seasons which included the historic home run chase of
1998 with Sammy Sosa.
While it is good
that McGwire finally came correct and owned what he did, I just have to ask
him one question:
What took you
so long?
I mean, what
changed between that fateful day in Congress and a few days ago that
compelled him to admit it? Does he really want to get into the Hall of
Fame that badly?
And I have a
bigger problem when he said that the steroids did not help him in hitting
those home runs, breaking Roger Maris' single season home run record in the
process. McGwire took steroids because they enhanced his play.
After all, if steroids do not help, why take them?
Again, credit to
McGwire for doing the right thing and admitting steroid use. It's just
that it was a few years too late. And that matters to the Hall of Fame
voters and the court of public opinion.
