Lessons Learned in College Football's Week 9...

By Scott Burks

Here are my thoughts on Week 9 in college football...

Gators coach Urban Meyer's form of discipline is disgusting.  Talk about a coach taking charge and setting an example for young players to follow.  After Florida stud linebacker Brandon Spikes' blatant attempted eye-gouging on a Georgia running back during Saturday's game, Meyer took action for suspending Spikes -- for A HALF -- against Vanderbilt.  Meyer sends the wrong message: "you can do whatever the hell you want if you are any good and make plays".

The worst part was the SEC applauding the move.  Are you kidding me?  Just suspended for a half against a terrible Vanderbilt team?  I wish I could say that I was surprised, but I shouldn't be.  Down in these parts, to paraphrase the great Wu-Tang Clan, "football rules everything around us..."

Iowa is not a BCS-caliber contender.  I once said that Iowa is the best team in the Big Ten (11).  That may be still true, but Iowa is also a weak-ass top team.  And while they did come from behind to smack Indiana on Saturday, Iowa was down 21-7 at one point.  Hell, if it wasn't for Indiana remembering it was Indiana (Iowa's 86-yard interception return for a touchdown), the Hawkeyes would have been down 28-7.  I'll keep an open mind with Iowa if they win at Ohio State later in the year.  As for now: WEAK!

If Cincinnati beats Pitt and runs the table, they deserve a spot in the BCS title game.  The Bearcats have been one of the best stories in college football.  After starting the year unranked, Cincinnati is ranked 5th in the BCS.  Not bad for a Big East school!  At any rate, UC's remaining tough opponents are West Virginia (at home) and Pittsburgh.  If UC wins in Pittsburgh, the voters will have a hard time making a case against the Bearcats.

Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez is officially back on the hot seat Times are tough again for Rich-Rod.  Just when Michigan conned us all with that 4-0 start, the Wolverines fell to 5-4 with an 38-13 ass-kicking at the hands of Illinois.  I said at the beginning of the college football season that Rich-Rod had to win early and often to stay off the hot seat.  Well, at least he had the first part right -- but almost is not good enough at a storied program like Michigan...

Your feedback is wanted!!!
