Lessons Learned in College Football's Week 10...

By Scott Burks
Here are my thoughts on Week 10 in
college football...
The Big East is no longer the "Big Least".
What a difference a year makes! A year after people, including yours
truly, were trashing the Big East for being weak, fraudulent, and as being
the "Big Least", the Big East turned into one of the better conferences this
season. Both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are ranked in the top 10, with
UC sitting at 9-0. West Virginia and South Florida are also ranked in
the BCS rankings. UC may not have a robust resume as does Florida and
Alabama, but if they score wins over West Virginia and Pitt to close the
season, UC will be in the conversation.
Iowa was exposed as the fraud that it is.
I cannot believe that once said Iowa is the best team in the Big Ten (11).
Look, I know they lost their starting QB to injury during the Northwestern
game. It's just that Iowa should not have lost to Northwestern AT
HOME. This, coupled with an upcoming loss to Ohio State next week,
officially ends Iowa national championship hopes. I should have known
something was amiss when Iowa barely eked out
a
win over Northern Iowa to open the season. Speaking of Big Ten
frauds...
...And so was
Penn State. Yet another team that fattens its record against
patsies bites the dust. It's telling that Penn State lost to the only
good teams on their schedules by more than 10 points -- both of which came
at home! If the BCS really counts the strength of schedule the way
it's designed to, we'd have less frauds by this point of the season.
For the last couple of seasons, Penn State has been frauds. The
Nittany Lions might as well get ready to get their asses kicked in another
bowl game.
By the way, is
the Big Ten (11) the conference for frauds or what? Whenever Ohio
State is the best to offer, you've had a bad year.
Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez has company in the
"hot seat club" -- Charlie Weis.
Times are getting tougher for my favorite punching bag in the Big Ten (11).
Michigan lost to Purdue last Saturday -- AT HOME! What in Bo
Schembecler is going on here? The loss to Purdue leaves Michigan tied
for last place in the Big Ten (11). This is just a hunch, but if
Michigan loses out the rest of the year (including ANOTHER loss to Ohio
State), Rich-Rod won't be back coaching next season.
At least Rich-Rod could say, "at least I'm not
the only coaching fraud in college football." The job Charlie Weis is
doing in Notre Dame is pathetic by Notre Dame's standards. The
Fighting Irish have absolutely NO BUSINESS LOSING TO NAVY two out of the
last three years -- with two of those losses coming AT HOME! With
games left at #8 Pittsburgh and Stanford, it's possible for the Irish to
finish with 5 losses and another so-so bowl game. People at Notre Dame
expect better, and deserve better...
TCU will get a
shot in at the BCS Championship if it finishes undefeated. TCU's
resume is impressive, with road wins over Clemson and BYU (make that a
BEAT-DOWN at BYU). If TCU wins at #16 Utah and finishes unbeaten, then
TCU should be all but assured a shot at the national championship. The
only thing that will be standing in their way is unbeaten Texas.
Florida or Alabama will lose because they will be playing each other in the
SEC championship next month.
