Thoughts on Week 9 in the NFL...

By Scott Burks
Here are my thoughts on Week 9 in
the NFL...
The Cincinnati
Bengals are among the AFC elite. The Bengals played one hell of a
game against the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday. That Bengals "D" is the
reason the Bengals are one of the best success stories this season.
Cincinnati showed Baltimore and the rest of the NFL that it is not a fluke
and is ready to assert control in the AFC North. Now the real test
comes this coming weekend against my Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh.
If the Bengals beat the defending world champions, then look the hell out.
(My Cincinnati-born and bred wife and in-laws
would be talking trash the rest of the year if that happens)
Speaking of the AFC North...
The AFC North is the toughest division in the
NFL. This is one of
the divisions which its top three teams have an aggregate record of 16-8.
My Steelers, along with the Bengals and Ravens, are among the top teams in
the AFC, if not the NFL. This division is personified by physical,
smash-mouth, blue-collar football. The NFC North is finding that out,
and the AFC West is finding that out. Forget the NFC East, I'll ride
and die with the AFC North in 2009...
The Dallas
Cowboys are not back yet.
The Cowboys had a nice win against the Philadelphia Eagles on the road last
Sunday night. In fact, it was a damn good win. However, given
the Cowboys' history, it would be unwise for Cowboys fans to get
over-excited. The Cowboys have been bad in December the last several
seasons. Hell, QB Tony Romo has yet to win a game of consequence
during that time. The messed up part about that is Dallas has talent
-- LOTS of talent. It's just that Dallas hasn't had enough heart to
put it together in a very long time. If and when the Cowboys do start
winning games in December, then MAYBE I'll become a believer.
Who are the Arizona Cardinals?
This has to be the most perplexing team in the NFL. One minute, the
Cardinals look like gang-busters while beating the Giants on the road during
prime time. The next week they laid an egg against a terrible Carolina
Panthers team. Then the Cardinals bounced back with a beat-down in
Chicago. What gives Arizona? Just who the hell are you guys?
Should I take you seriously or not? We'll find out when they host the
God-awful Seattle Seahawks this coming Sunday.
The New
Orleans Saints are the best in the NFL. The
Saints are scary good. They keep finding new ways to win. They
beat a Panthers team that historically has their number, to the tune of
seven straight wins in New Orleans before last Sunday's game. The
Saints defense is finally playing like a top-15 defense. I'll cast my
lot with the Saints over any NFL team at the moment.
