The BCS Is Back: Let's Get it On!!!

By Scott Burks
The Bowl Championship Series, otherwise known
as the BCS (or the "B_S" for those who do hate the system), put out it's
first rankings last week.
While the BCS does have it's faults (it's the
brainchild of greedy college presidents as a cartel to make schools in major
conferences more cheddar), it is a good thing. After all, it pits #1
vs. #2 for the national championship every year. It's been a few years
since we last had a split national championship in college football --
thanks to the BCS.
It also ensures that schools schedule
reputable opponents on their schedules. That makes the regular season,
in and of itself, a playoff. Speaking of playoffs, I can point
out many reasons why college football does not need a playoff, but I'll
focus on one...
There are just way too many college football
programs to have a legit playoff.
The one reason alone would open a Pandora's
Box the size of Mark Mangino's ass. How many teams should be invited?
Who should be invited? What about the Notre Dame factor? Either
way, there would be problems.
One thing I would change is that I would
eliminate the rankings. That way, the rankings would not influence the
BCS rankings. It would be purely based on each team's record and
strength of schedules.
Of course, the powers that be (namely,
sportswriters, USA Today, and ESPN) would not allow that because of the
interest and ratings generated from college football games. So instead
of blaming the BCS for all the world's ills, everyone should be held
accountable.
