Thoughts on College Football's Opening Weekend...

By Scott Burks
It's good to see college football is back.
All the hype surrounding the favorites to win the national title, the big
match-ups, and Heisman hopefuls are back in full swing. There is
nothing like it (except the NFL, of course). At any rate, here is what
I took home from Week 1 of the college football season.
It was a bad weekend for the ACC.
Once again, the conference of my youth had let me down. Wake Forest
lost to Baylor at home -- the same Baylor team that Wake beat last year
on the road 41-13. My alma mater NC State lost to a bad South
Carolina team at home. Virginia Tech gave a valiant effort, but was
overpowered by Alabama 34-24. And here's the money-shot: Virginia and
Duke lost to William and Mary and Richmond, respectively -- two LOWER TIERED
NCAA TEAMS!!! Well, I guess it could be worse, ...they could be the
Big East.
BYU and Boise State are here to stay.
Boise State administered a beat-down of epic proportions on a good Oregon
team. They made Oregon look so bad that the Ducks wanted to fight
after the game. BYU rallied against Oklahoma in what was considered a
home game for OU. And stop with the "if OU had Bradford, it would have
won" crap. Anyone watching that game knew that before Bradford was
knocked out of the game with an injury, BYU's defense still held OU's
offense in check. And last I checked, Bradford didn't play defense.
BYU's game winning drive did not come against OU's scrubs. The bottom
line is this: BYU and Boise State showed the BCS that they are not going
away anytime soon. Speaking of OU...
Oklahoma's season is over. I say
that because the Sooners always have national title aspirations every year.
The loss to BYU was bad enough, but the Sooners will be without QB Sam
Bradford for a while. And I do not care what anyone says, Bradford's
injury (sprained shoulder) looks worse than what is being led on. The
Sooners will not beat Miami without Bradford. Hell, the Sooners may
not beat Tulsa without Bradford.
Norte Dame is not all that. They
only played Nevada folks -- and they played Nevada at home! Nevada and
it's low-ranked defense across the board did not stand a chance against the
Fighting Irish. If Norte Dame wants to show me its back, it needs to
march into Ann Arbor next weekend and beat Michigan. A nice thought,
except it's not going to happen.
