Lessons Learned in College Football's Week 3...

By Scott Burks
Here are my thoughts on Week 3 in
college football...
So much for USC being the team to beat this
season.
All that talk about USC being a favorite to win the national title got put
to bed with that last-second loss to Washington. The fact that USC
could not score over 20 points against the second-rate (albeit improving)
Huskies. I guess USC had to fill its quota of losing once a year to a
scrub.
This goes to back up Mike Lupica's (from
ESPN's "The Sports Reporters") claim that USC is one of the more overrated
football squads in college football. All that talent the Trojans field
year after year, and head coach Pete Carroll has just two national titles to
show for it.
The ACC represented in a HUGE way.
As a person who grew up in ACC country, I am sticking my chest out a little
bit after big wins by Florida State and Virginia Tech. Florida State
bitch-slapped BYU on the road 54-28. If you watched the game, you'd
know that final score did not reflect how one-sided this contest was.
Meanwhile, Virginia Tech eked out a HUGE win against a good Nebraska team
16-15. So, both big games against top 25 teams resulted in victories.
To the ACC critics: tell me how the ACC's ass tastes!
Tennessee
"won" in its loss to Florida.
I know that there are no such things as moral victories -- particularly in
the SEC. However, Tennessee's head coach Lane Kiffin has to be feeling
pretty good about his team. We all expected Florida to beat the
dog-piss out of the Volunteers, only to fight tooth and nail to the end.
Kiffin sent the following messages: his team is not intimidated by Florida
and will continue to assert itself in the SEC landscape.
Georgia cannot play defense.
First it was the 41-37 shootout win against a South Carolina team who
normally cannot score points. Now it's the 52-41 win over a sorry
Arkansas team. What is this, the Big 12?! At any rate, Georgia
coach Mark Richt has to be worried that he has yet to field a defense this
season. If he is unable to do so, then Georgia will have a hard time
competing against the SEC's elite this season.
