Lessons Learned in College Football's Week 4...

By Scott Burks
Here are my thoughts on Week 4 in
college football...
Penn State is weak and extremely overrated.
This is exhibit "A" as to why there should be no preseason rankings in
college football. Penn State was clearly not worthy of its #5 ranking
-- not after getting fat off the likes of Akron, Syracuse, and Temple (are
they still a Division 1 program?). I figured the Nittany Lions would
lose to Iowa, but not like that -- especially not after being up 10-0.
Penn State's national championship aspirations have just left the building.
The ACC stunk again. So much for
that "tell me how the ACC's ass tastes!" line from last week. Clemson
lost at home against a good TCU team. While Clemson losing against the
15th-ranked TCU is not such a bad thing, Florida State had no business
getting its ass kicked by an unranked (but decent) South Florida. Way
to follow up an excellent win at BYU with a dud at home Florida State!
Throw in that beatdown Rutgers administered on Maryland (at home no less),
and it was another bad week for the ACC.
The Cincinnati
Bearcats is a force to be reckoned with.
How 'bout those Bearcats? They are truly the "beasts of the east" in
what is truly the worst BCS conference (aside from South Florida) in the
country. Cincinnati has all the tools: the phat, refurbished football
stadium, the added amenities for football are the highlights. What we
have here is a sleeping giant that is about to be unleashed. Looks
like Ohio State will soon have some recruiting competition in the state of
Ohio.
Speaking of South
Florida, how about that impressive win at Florida State? Nice job by
the Bulls!
Norte Dame still sucks.
So the Fighting Irish beat Purdue. They still stink. They are
still overrated. And they still will ride their way to a big money
bowl game on the strength of their non-conference association and their
weak-ass schedule (USC is the only opponent of consequence left on the
schedule). Irish coach Charlie Weis needs to grow a pair and schedule
some real teams for a change.
Alabama -- not Florida -- is the best team
in college football. This is another reason why there should be no
preseason rankings. Florida is the top-ranked team on the strength of
winning the national title and Tim Tebow returning for his senior season.
So far, the toughest game came against a Tennessee team (by the score 23-13)
that should win no more than six games. Florida has played patsy after
patsy along the way.
Meanwhile, Alabama spanked a good Virginia
Tech team to start the season. Alabama will also play Ole Miss this
season (Florida will not). Sure, they have played some glorified
scrimmages, but the Crimson Tide's beat-down of the Va. Tech showed us that
they are legit. Too bad Alabama won't show that to Florida on the
field before the SEC championship.
